Death by Fantail

New Zealand Fantail with a moth

While testing a new camera and lens combination today, I managed to shoot the image above of a New Zealand Fantail in the process of subduing a moth by beating it to death on a branch, before eating it.

With recent technology advances in digital cameras and lenses we photographers have it so much easier nowadays, especially when it comes to shooting in low light situations with fast auto focusing image stabilising  lenses.

To give you some idea of what is possible, the image below was shot hand-held with Canon’s latest DSLR the 1D M4, with a 500mm lens plus a 1.4x  converter . The exposure details were ISO 2500 , aperture f5.6  and a shutter speed of 1/200sec.
